There’s always next year…

This time of year is always a little sad for me. It’s not the cold temperatures, the short days, the long nights, or the end of the holidays. What really hurts is that my fantasy football season is now over. And this year’s winnings are no war spoils. But it’s not the lack of money that gets me down. No. It’s the end of five months of pure, masculine competition. Five months of week-long suspense and anticipation. Five months of trash-talk and follow-through. Five months of escape.

Since August, when my research and scouting began, my workdays were filled by gathering information, plotting acquisitions, wondering about waiver wire pickups. Now I sit at my desk and struggle to make it through another day. (Perhaps that’s why I started blogging). I still think about how many touchdowns LT might score this week, or how many yards Peyton Manning might throw for, but it just isn’t the same. How can it be? Their stats no longer affect my life in any way. But just last week those numbers would make me do the knee-jiggle dance in my living room. I feel like an ex-con let out of jail after 20 years; I am trying to relearn how to live my life. And it’s hard.

And so, as another year of fantasy football ends, another calendar year begins. It’s time to hang up my mouse and start reflecting on the mistakes I made: Drafting a kicker in the 6th round, playing Daunte Culpepper, and trading away TO. It’s time to take note of my mistakes and start planning for next year’s draft.

I know how you feel. My name is Andy, and I am addicted to Fantasy Football (Hello Andy). I had an incredible run this year. I was able to draft Peyton in the first round, and hung out at about number two and three for most of the season. Alas, when Peyton had some trouble, my team tanked. I did so bad, I didn’t even make the playoffs.

But there is always next year.
